Distinguished and Famous people from Koroit
🏘️ William Rutledge
William Rutledge’s Farnham property near Koroit became an important part of his pastoral career. Taken up with partners in 1843, the special survey was worked by tenants, including Irish families whom Rutledge helped bring to Victoria. His commercial activities were far-reaching but not uniformly successful: his trading partnership collapsed in 1862. He later moved from Port Fairy to Farnham and rebuilt his fortune through Lincoln sheep.
📚 Henry Handel Richardson
Novelist Henry Handel Richardson, the pen name of Ethel Richardson, lived in Koroit during her childhood. The town subsequently entered The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, her major fictional exploration of a family’s life in colonial Australia. Victoria’s heritage record recognises that literary association as part of Koroit’s significance, alongside its buildings and social history. The connection adds another way of reading the streets: they belong not only to a surviving townscape but also to a writer’s remembered and reworked childhood world. Richardson’s relationship with Koroit is through residence and literary setting.
